About Us
Amy and Ken had each experienced significant life-altering events, and endured many dark nights of the soul. Individually, they were determined to rebuild and experience the light from within. Unknowingly, both were ready to find each other through the handiwork of God and his heavenly bees.
They seemed to come from different worlds but felt this new life they were creating was simply meant to be. Every moment of their entire life would be cherished because each triumph or tragedy was one moment closer to finding where they belong. They are more than a couple; they are best friends.
During Hurricane Helene, Ken was rerouted due to road closures and noticed a sign. “Land for Sale by Owner.” Within days, a genuine, old fashioned handshake sealed the deal. Amy and Ken were proud new owners of reforested farmland minutes outside Wilmington. The new dream had commenced.
The land eloquently called their names and many others heard the whisper gliding through the winds of change. Family and members of the community stepped forth to help build something bigger than themselves. This sanctuary was hand-crafted with love and designed to work with the flow of nature.
The custom built bridge was made from trees cut from the old farm road. It stands as a metaphor between the old and new ways of thinking about what life has to offer and the choices we make. The trails allow you to wander through native wetlands and a canopied pine forest with ease.
The colorful apiary is an added benefit to the healing path of nature in a rustic setting. The wildflowers, blueberries and muscadine are just a few of the native choices for a fanciful feast whether you are sitting in the middle of the woods or on the back of a pickup truck. There is something for all to enjoy.
Life without friends, family, and companions on the road less traveled isn’t really living. Revering each moment together enlightens the way. The love we experience is unconditional and continues to evolve. We have found our true home, and hope to expand our message through God’s love, light, and energy.
Special Note: Ken feels our love is conditional. Why? Because Amy always comes up with the most ridiculous ideas and wants Ken to play along! Ken participates most of the time, but at other times, for some odd reason, he just won’t comply! Call me crazy, but if Ken loves Amy, he should always do what she wants. Ha! Life is more fun when we find precious moments to laugh. We hope to see you soon!
Amy Olmedo
Amy Olmedo is the heart and visionary behind White Heron Retreat, a 10-acre woodland sanctuary in Delco, NC, just outside Wilmington. After surviving a traumatic brain injury, PTSD, divorce, and a series of near-death experiences, Amy experienced a profound spiritual awakening that led her to reconnect with her inner creativity and sense of purpose. From that transformation came White Heron, A Creation Story—her debut book that blends personal reflection, spiritual insight, and healing wisdom to guide others through life’s darkest hours. Today, Amy welcomes visitors to White Heron Retreat to find peace, connection, and clarity through nature, storytelling, and soulful community. Her work is rooted in compassion, resilience, and a deep belief in the magic that lives within us all.
Ken Edgar
Ken Edgar is a Master Beekeeper, Army veteran, and founder of The Honey Bee Farm at White Heron Retreat in Columbus County, NC. After moving to Wilmington from Indiana and retiring from the military, Ken turned a 20-year hobby into a full-time passion—producing 100% raw, unfiltered honey and educating others about the vital role of bees. He’s taught at schools, zoos, and community events across southeastern North Carolina and formerly served as President of the Brunswick County Beekeepers Association. Ken now leads immersive experiences through his Living Classrooms Bee Hive project, inviting guests to see, taste, and feel the magic of bees and nature. (Yes—he’s even been featured in the news after his bees were stolen in what’s legally known as bee rustling!)
Kiwi
Kiwi is a 10 year old Australian Shepherd who can still run about 35 miles an hour. Her main goal is to herd you and your vehicle, so be careful when approaching her sanctuary. Her eyes are soft, sweet and beautifully outlined with charcoal black. She loves to smile, and tilt her head to the side as if she knows what you are saying.
Archer
Archer is a Red Border Collie with two different colored eyes. He was rescued as a puppy and thus fully embraces his freedom. He keeps himself busy with a multitude of tasks, and loves to take quiet respite under the forested wetland bridge. He is very much in tune with the spiritual realm and loves to give hugs. If he bows down, he simply wants to play.

White Heron Retreat & Honey Bee Farm is a handcrafted sanctuary built with love, offering a space to reconnect with nature and yourself. Located on reforested land in Delco, NC, the retreat features diverse hiking trails through loblolly forests and wetlands, a scenic bridge built from repurposed farm road trees, and quiet places for rest and reflection. The working honey bee farm provides pure wildflower honey and hosts immersive beekeeping experiences led by a seasoned master beekeeper. With classes for all ages, monthly gatherings, and a welcoming atmosphere for children, therapeutic animals, and small groups, White Heron Retreat invites you to slow down, explore, and be part of something meaningful. Visitors are encouraged to respect the land, tread lightly, and honor the harmony of the natural world.
Wildlife & Pets
As with the rest of wildlife, please do not feed the animals. If you are not comfortable around animals, please call in advance so we can discuss your needs. If you bring your service or therapeutic pet, please note: we do not have fences. The goal is to explore, rest and rejuvenate for all of us in a serene, natural setting. Please remember to scoop the poop.
