Did You know?
Beekeepers may suffer up to 90% loss of colonies every year! More than 80% of our plants depend on pollinators. In the eastern portion of the United States 53 wild bee species are experiencing declines in population.
Colony Loss/Death
Each year, honey bee colony deaths/losses are financially devastating to beekepers. That’s right, beekeepers have an exceedingly difficult time paying for equipment and supplies to bring natures sweet remedy into your home and onto your table. Next time you look at your plate of food, remember, 2/3 of your meal came from the work of these heavenly creatures.
The Queen Bee
The Queen Bee! She has about 80,000 followers in her colony consisting of nurse bees, workers bees, elder bees and drones all with differing tasks to sustain the health of the entire community. Miraculously, all those bees only feel one Queen is buzz worthy. If something happens to her, the colony will replace her or the entire colony will fail.
Contributing Factors to Bee Population Decline and Colony Loss
✓ Habitat, nutrition, pesticides, disease, and management practices. At The Honey Bee Farm, we are dedicated to optimizing all conditions related to the care, maintenance, and propagation of honey bees and their golden honey.
✓ Human encroachment and destruction of natural bee habitat—our habitat—plus, backyard beekeepers who do not know best practices to keep their colonies healthy and alive.
✓ The neonicotinoids in pesticides prevent bees from finding their way back home each night, and other forms of pest control are detrimental to the survival of the colony.
✓ The Varroa Destructor Mite—Mite V out of Africa—is a vector for 25 different viruses that are harmful to bee health. The Hive Beetle can also contaminate the honeycomb, causing bees to abandon the hive and never return.

Other Reasons for Population Decline
Bee Rustling Awareness and Concerted Response Efforts: Other reasons for loss, which are common on the west coast, and are increasing along the east coast of the United States are bee hive theft. We know, it has happened to us. Spreading awareness and best practices will help to save our bees from thieves.
